Sandy Loam is typically made up of sands with varying amounts of silts and clays. This soil profile is usually well drained and is the reason it is sought after by many gardeners. Usually, this type of soil has a more neutral pH and is easily maintained for gardening when proper nutrients and amendments are made. We harvest our sandy loam here locally and it works well for many different uses from filling low spots to entirely grading off a new build construction site. Select Fill is a material used most often with building pads to pour concrete over. Select Fill is usually a mix of clay and sand that is dug and tossed to get a consistent mix so that when worked and compacted, the material will pass required testing for engineer specifications on building pads. Select fill has many different specifications though and usually up to to the engineer's discretion about what certain plasticity index to meet. Torpedo sand is a course-grained sand and gravel mix. This product is made from crushing and screening the sand and aggregate then washing it clean. Typically it will contain gravels not larger than around 3/8". This sand can be used setting pavers, flagstone, and other stepping stones. It is also used in concrete but not mortar mixes. Torpedo sand also works great for septic leach areas for pipe bedding and as an amendment for hard pack clay soils to break up the clay and allow more porosity and drainage. White Masonry Sand is most commonly used as an ingredient in ready-mix concrete, mortar, and other concrete types. White masonry sand is what most masons use in bricklaying and masonry stonework. This fine grain washed sand also works great under pavers, swimming pools, volleyball courts, and sand play boxes. The sand is naturally white to translucent in color. Yellow Masonry sand also known as sharp sand or concrete sand has many applications. This sand is used as the base layer for pavers, flagstone, and other leveling needs. It is typically a larger particle size and more sharp and angular in shape than the white sand thus allowing more drainage where needed. Some masons also use this particular sand in some stucco applications.
